Lists, lists, lists!

I love lists. And I make a whole lot of them. With relish. Lists for me are an absolute necessity.

Mark and I run two businesses and have three children. My life is highly scheduled. To keep on schedule I refer to my lists and my diary. Non-stop. Without them I’d fail. Fail at being a good mother. Fail at being a good businesswoman. Each morning, once back from the school run, I make a to do today list.Today for instance includes: write this article; write my monthly minute for my networking lunch; work out last month’s sales statistics and write them-up on the whiteboard. By putting it down on paper it means I actually do each task. I can’t forget. Or put it off.

Each week we have a marketing meeting. This makes people laugh. And it is quite funny. There’s only the two of us. We live and work together. So why on earth do we have a formal meeting? Well it’s really to make another list. Mark takes the notes. He writes them up and gives it back to me. All neat and tidy and organised. It’s our weekly list so we both know what we’re doing. And we have to stick to it because it’s all written down. Then we have lists of what we need to achieve in the next month, the next year, and then there’s the BIG one. Actually, strictly speaking it’s not a list. So it’s not big because it’s long. It’s big because it’s our dream. Of course, I have the usual lists, for shopping and Christmas presents. I also have a middle of the night-can’t sleep-just remembered something really important list. It all sounds so exhausting. But the reality is, lists make life just a little bit less exhausting. Just wish they could do the ironing too.
